Biography

  Soprano Sonya Argiró started her vocal studies at the School of Music in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1995. In 1998, she was a student at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria where she was awarded with full scholarship and was a student of Prof. Mila Dulgerova. She received her BM in 2002 and her MM in 2003.

 

  In 2004, she arrived in US to further pursue her vocal studies and career. In 2005, she received a scholarship and joined the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in New York as a student of Dr. Mary Kay McGarvey. In the spring of 2009, she was chosen, to be one of the 12 singers at the "Ezio Pinza Council for American Singers of Opera" summer program in Oderzo, Italy and was awarded with a scholarship. At EPCASO, she studied with Claudia Pinza and coach Enza Ferrara (La Scala). Also, she participated in Master Classes with world renowned artists - Maria Chiara and Vivica Genaux. She was one of the few singers chosen by Maestro Maurizio Arena (Arena di Verona) to be a part of his one week master class and career guidance program.

 

  Ms. Argiró is currently a Resident Artist with Vocal Productions NYC, and is working with Mr. Valentin Peytchinov who is the Founder and Artistic Director of VPNYC .

 

  As a soloist, Ms. Argiró has performed in United States and Europe and has a numerous awards and honors to her credit such as 3rd Prize winner at Jaume Aragall International Competition in 2004; Finalist at the International Music Competition of the ARD in 2003; Special Award at “Katya Popova” International Competition in 2003; 1st Prize Winner at “Lyubomir Pipkov” International Competition and International Vocal Competition Dobrich in 2001, and also 1st Prize Winner “Svetoslav Obretenov” Competitionin 2000.

 

  Ms. Argiró’s various repertoire includes works by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Rahmaninov, Bizet, Massenet, Rimsky-Korsakov, J. Strauss, R. Strauss, Shubert, Shuman, Liszt, Brahms, Puccini, Leoncavallo, Verdi and Menotti.
